4 Ways to Protect Elderly Against Hate Crimes and Scams During Quarantine

Published by Marcus Hart

As we all sit in quarantine within what would think will be the comfort of our homes, the ongoing question has been what is it that we can do? If you need something do I would recommend you read, most importantly my true crime books firstly and wait for the next one to come out, says author Eve DeLange.
During this talk with Eve DeLange, we opened up with how she got intrigued like many of us about the life of an FBI agent, where do scams come from, and lastly the bigger concern of crime being where you live under your nose. Eve says it was always the bad news reporting that got to her and writing became a good outlet for it. Eventually, watching TV crime stories about FBI agents and other crime investigation cases became a fascination that inspired the creation of the characters Agent Ragetti and Smitty in her books. It relaxed Eve knowing that she can turn a sad ending to a story into a happy ending.
Agent Ragetti and Smitty derived from a personal story Eve heard about a doctor involved in a Medicare scam who didn't get the proper punishment in the end. With so much heighten paranoia in every city with the spread of the coronavirus, we are still putting a lot of trust in doctors to do the right thing and once the outbreak is given recommendations there is a huge potential of bad doctors exploited the system in an attempt to line their pockets. Eve exclaimed the vulnerability of the elderly population and uninformed.
The FBI and other law enforcement are at our beckon for support and should consider that they take care of the bad guys. Some of us have always wanted to know how do you become an agent and live as one. Likewise, with so much and anxiety and fear, many people are skeptical about law enforcement, especially at the federal level. Eve takes the extra forward to gives us comfort about how real people FBI agents are and the lives behind the shield they have. They are trained individuals and are the best agency to look to that can relate to what we all are experiencing in this current time even though they have been exposed to the most gruesome and violent cases and high-level white-collar crimes and scams that victimize Americans.
Eve provides four easy key things the older adult population can start implementing now to protect themselves from being victims during quarantine and even after. She says with all the store shelves being empty the next thing will be stealing and senior citizens will be most targeted victims. Here are four points:
  • Have a cell phone on your person at all times
  • Add extra security on doors
  • Rather you live in a safe neighborhood or not remember to lock the doors
  • Always remember that the more protection the better
It is always helpful if you know a law enforcement officer who lives in the neighborhood but if this isn't the case, Eve recommends that you get you a dog (rather small or big). The dog will alert you and give you that extra time to make that 911 call.
Eve books will bring you to conscious awareness and if you don't think it can happen to you then you might want to consider it. For example, she is currently working on her next project that will highlight older women who are looking love that fall victim to younger men that take them for all of their money. Older generations are still vibrant and outgoing and tend to have retirement savings and other sources of assets. This can make them a target for a scammer or con artist to come and romance them out of their money. As we move further into a forced shelter in the potential of isolation away from human contact and desperation could distort the psyche on who you are trusting.
Remember if something looks and sounds good it isn't always good. We need more people in the law enforcement field now because we so many people who need protection, Eve DeLange adds.
