Why We Need Storytelling During Times Like This

Published by Marcus Hart

Every generation has had its trauma and fears throughout time rather it be nuclear fallout drills or the most current coronavirus pandemic. Tom Corbett says the only thing missing is collective hope in today's times to be able to easily work yourself through the fears and anxieties that accompany us with these times. Where can you find this hope? One way is in storytelling.
In this conversation with Tom Corbett, he places an emphasis on how essential it is for life to be able to tell your story in 25 words or less in a summary. He says you should be able to tell it well and make it convincing. Tom always had a passion for writing but throughout his life, he took on different roles professionally that didn't allow for room to write personal pieces. Once he had gotten much older he was able to write more in-depth due to a richer life full of insight and experience. This is how we should write and share our stories as we all experience this pressing time in quarantine. Storytelling elements are full of style and Tom shares a good story of his time in the Peace Corps in India and this was a changing process for him as it opened the door and allowed him to consciously shift how to really capture drama, sadness, and other emotions of the experience there for a great mashup for readers to enjoy. Likewise, a well-narrated book will help you escape and also be able to feel all of those emotions. It is the process of storytelling that Tom Corbett enjoys. Storytelling can help us walk backward and move forwards in time to be able to easily not worry as much about the opportunities ahead. Reading books that have great storytelling elements is one way to start implementing this practice. Tom believes we are too fed on the instant digestion of social media versus reading a book and that if we draw upon our own experiences we could get the meat of our stories.
